IPReg has published the findings from its Education Review Call for Evidence and Feedback, which ran from February to April 2026. The findings will inform proposals on the future of qualification and training for patent and trade mark attorneys.
Practical experience and professional standards
Respondents emphasised the importance of supervised practical experience, mentoring and workplace support in developing professional competence. Patent-specific responses highlighted technical excellence and the specialist nature of patent practice.
The findings also underline the need for any changes to be proportionate and to reflect the different needs of the two professions.
What happens next?
IPReg will use the responses, alongside further research and stakeholder engagement, to develop proposals covering competency frameworks, accreditation standards and quality assurance. A three-month public consultation is planned to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.
What does this mean for current trainees?
IPReg describes the review as future-focused. It is not intended to change current qualification requirements and arrangements in the short term. Any future changes will be introduced with notice and appropriate lead-in times.
The review also considers barriers to entry and how qualification routes can become more accessible while maintaining professional standards.
